Lap Band Surgery Information

The Lap Band Surgery Procedure
Lap-Band™ is the
abbreviated and trademarked combination of two words - "lap" from
laparoscopic and "band" from gastric band. The system's silicone
elastomeric band is placed around the upper part of the stomach,
creating a small stomach pouch that can hold only a small amount of
food. This part of the stomach is connected to the lower part
through a small outlet called a stoma. Food passes through the stoma
more slowly so the patient feels full for a longer period of time.
The
Lap-Band Adjustable
Gastric Banding System was developed in the 1993 by a team of
Belgium doctors in an attempt to perfect the use of laparoscopic
surgery in obese patients requiring operations to assist with weight
loss.
The
laparoscopic band is
composed of three parts: the silicon band, connective tubing, and an
access port. The band is placed around the stomach, and the tubing
connects the band to the port. The port is placed entirely beneath
the skin’s surface and is hidden from sight.
Advanced laparoscopic
surgery techniques are used to insert an adjustable ring around the
upper portion of the stomach creating two pouches: a small top pouch
where your food initially is held and the bottom larger pouch where
the food is digested. Saline is then inserted into the port and the
band tightens around the stomach creating restriction. It is this
restriction that makes you feel full sooner and controls the process
of digestion leaving you satisfied longer as well. As you lose
weight, the band will become slightly loose making your check ups
vital to your success.
